Definition

Tendons are the structures that connect a muscle to the bone. These are tough fibrous structures that help in movements and maintain the stability of a joint. An injury to these structures is called as a tendon injury and may involve swelling of the tendons - called tendonitis or even a tear along with swelling and pain.1

As per Ayurveda, tendons are considered to arise from the rakta dhatu (hematopoietic system). The rakta dhatu is controlled by the pitta dosha and, hence any tendon related problem may considered under the aegis of a pittaja vyadhi.2
