Definition

Schizophrenia refers to a mental condition here the person loses sense of time and perception and often believes in imaginary things and situations. It is a long standing and serious mental disorder that affects a person’s thinking, feelings and behavior.1

In Ayurveda all type of mental disorders are classified under the heading of ‘Unmada’ and Atatvabhinivesha.2, 3

As per the description in Ayurvedic texts, the nidana (cause), lakshana (symptoms), samprapti (pathogenesis) and sadhya-asadhyata (prognosis) of sannipataja Unmada resembles the course and presentation of Schizophrenia. 4
