Definition

Intertrigo (intertriginous dermatitis) is an inflammatory disorder of skin folds, caused or intensified by heat, moisture, softening, lack of air circulation, and friction. Infection, commonly due to Candida colonization but may be viral or bacterial or due to other fungi, usually worsens the condition.1 Intertrigo is commonly observed on:

  • The axilla (area directly under the joint where s connect the joints)
  • Perineum [area between the anus and scrotum (males)/vulva (females)]
  • Inframammary creases (natural boundary of breast from below)
  • Abdominal folds.[i]
