The term Diverticula means small sized pockets in the intestinal walls. These generally occur in the lower part of the large intestine (colon) and are quite common in people above the age of 40 without causing serious problems.1

At time, some of these pouches may develop an infection causing swelling. This is known as Diverticulitis. It is responsible for causing severe pain in abdomen, fever, nausea and changes in bowel habits.
Though mild diverticulitis can be taken care with adequate rest, changes in food habits and medicines, severe or recurring diverticulitis often requires surgery.1
In Ayurveda, diverticular diseases are described under Grahaniroga – a disease in which digestive fire is impaired. .6

Any person, who does not adapt to practices of food (basis time, place, and season), and suppresses natural urges will be at risk of weakened digestive power.
