Constipation in children refers to the time delay or difficulty in passing stool, which is present for two or more weeks. More than the child, it causes distress to parents and caregivers as parents may fear it to be a sign of any serious medical problem.1
Ayurveda explains the symptoms of constipation in infants/children as ‘Malavrodha’ (obstruction of stool). Additionally, synonyms such as Vibhandha, Vitgraha, Kabja (Kabz), Anaha and Koshtabadhata are used interchangeably.3

Many young children are known to tighten the external anal opening if they do not wish to pass motions. Regular following of this practice reduces the motility of the rectum and causes hardening of the accumulated stools. Passing of such hard stools is difficult and painful - which again can lead to spasm in intestine and retention of the stools. This condition is termed as ‘functional constipation’. Most children who present with constipation have functional constipation.1
Yet, in some cases, constipation may be serious. Especially in infants - who do not pass motions within 48 hours of birth - this may be due to a serious disease called Hirschsprung’s disease.
